East Nusa Tenggara

East Nusa Tenggara, also known as the eastern part of the Lesser Sunda Islands, consists of more than 500 islands, with the largest ones being Sumba, Flores, and the western part of Timor; the latter shares land border with the country of East Timor (Timor Leste). This province is sub-divided into twenty-one regencies, and the capital and largest city, Kupang, can be found on West Timor. Contradicting towards most provinces in Indonesia, East Nusa Tenggara is a Christian-majority territory, and is the only Indonesian province where Roman Catholicism is the main religion.

Flores area

Flores area

This is the Northern part of this province and exists out of Flores Island and several smaller islands such as, Komodo, Alor archipelago and Solor. Although tourism in general is growing on the island, Flores also has a growing Eco-tourism industry, where you can visit traditional villages, stay with local families and join in Eco-friendly activities such as bird watching and trekking. Flores also has good snorkeling and scuba diving in several locations along the north coast, most notably Komodo and Riung.
Sumba area

Sumba area

This area consists out of the entire Island Sumba, which is devided in four regions. Known for its wild coastlines, surfers have been visiting this island for many years. The famous Nihi Resort, the world’s best hotel, which happens to be located here in Sumba, was founded by a couple of surfers. Aside from a couple of resorts, tourism infrastructure is very basic and it is not an easy destination for independent travel except for the most hardy of traveler. If you do make the effort though, you will be rewarded by experiencing a unique culture and some stunning beaches.
West Timor area

West Timor area

West Timor, which exists out of the Western part of Timor Island and several small island in this area, such as Rote and Sabu. According to legend, this island got its name accidentally when a lost Portuguese sailor arrived and asked a farmer where he was. The surprised farmer, who could not speak Portuguese, introduced himself, "Rote".

TIPS EAST NUSA TENGGARA

Komodo
Komodo Islands Located at the most western part of Flores, the Komodo Islands offer beautiful landscapes, such as white sandy beaches and is habitat of the Komodo Dragon and several marine species. These islands are already able to visit during a one day trip, or one can choose to take a live a board and explore this destination for several days on a boat.
Mount Kelimuntu
Mount Kelimuntu, probably most famous due to its three colored crater lakes that are situated 1,639 m above sea-level and is usually reached from Ende. The colors change on a regular basis with aqua/turquoise, green, red and chocolate brown reported. This amazing natural phenomenon is thought to be caused by chemical reactions of minerals in the lake triggered by volcano gas activity.
Wae Rebo Village
Wae Rebo Village located in West Manggarai regency. It is a traditional village, mostly untouched by technology and they live in round huts that signify the unity of their village. The only way to get to the village is to hike. For a fit person this hike is about 3 hours on small paths through the jungle. The pad starts in Denge, which is approximately a 20 minute drive located from Ruteng.
